State of Emergency in South Florida Due to Severe Weather

Image
A tropical disturbance has caused a rare flash flood emergency across much of southern Florida, with residents bracing for more heavy rainfall on Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday, torrential downpours and subsequent flooding blocked roads, stranded vehicles, and delayed the Florida Panthers en route to their Stanley Cup games in Canada against the Edmonton Oilers. The storm system, disorganized and moving from the Gulf of Mexico, coincides with the early June start of the hurricane season, forecasted to be one of the most active in recent years due to concerns about climate change increasing storm intensity. While the disturbance hasn't reached cyclone status, the National Hurricane Center gives it a slight chance of developing into a tropical system once it moves into the Atlantic Ocean after crossing Florida. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Miami warned on Thursday morning that heavy rainfall was expected for a third consecutive day. They cautioned that even a short durati...

The Florida Panthers continued their dominant run in the Stanley Cup Final, narrowly defeating the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in Game 3 at Edmonton’s Rogers Place on Thursday. This victory gives the Panthers a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-7 series, putting them just one win away from claiming the Cup for the first time in their 30-season history. Key contributions came from Aleksander Barkov and Sam Reinhart, each tallying a goal and an assist. Vladimir Tarasenko and Sam Bennett also found the back of the net, while goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made 32 saves on 35 shots. The Oilers showed resilience, narrowing the gap to one goal with a late surge. Brett Kulak's point shot deflected off Ryan McLeod to make it 4-3 with just over five minutes remaining. Kyrie Irving says the stakes are raised for Game 3 of the NBA Finals: "It starts with me."

Image
DALLAS — The last 12 games where Kyrie Irving has played against the Boston Celtics have all ended with the same outcome: his team lost. Irving and the Dallas Mavericks are eager to end this streak on Wednesday night when they host the Celtics in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. Boston currently leads the series 2-0. "First thing ... just accepting that I haven't played well or up to my standards, as well as I would have liked," Irving said. "Being back in Boston, there's such a level of desire that I have inside of me to play well. Wanted to be there for my teammates. As a competitor, it's frustrating. But I don't want to let that seep in or spill over to any other decisions I have to make there as a player." Irving shot only 35% in the first two games of these finals in Boston, averaging 14 points and four assists in his former home arena — where fans make it clear they don't like him much. He's shot 50% or less in each of his last 10 games aga...

Every Season 4 Episode of ‘The Boys’ Has “At Least One Totally F***ing Bananas Moment”

Creator Eric Kripke unpacks the wild three-episode premiere, reveals political inspirations for a new character, and teases what's ahead: "Episode six makes me cover my mouth with my hands every time I watch it." [This story contains spoilers from the first three episodes of season four of The Boys.] In the parallel universe of The Boys, where satirical humans and superheroes coexist, the most powerful "supe" in the world, Homelander, is on trial. Portrayed by Antony Starr, Homelander faces 12 jurors for committing a crime in public and getting away with it. Given his powers, Homelander is unsurprisingly found not guilty. Season four’s three-episode opener dives into more political chaos, reflecting real U.S. politics. Creator/showrunner Eric Kripke mentions that while the show is about Trumpism, it wasn’t planned to coincide with Trump’s trial. “We write what we’re either scared of or pissed off about,” he explains. The show remains unsubtle in its political ...

There Will Never Be Another Jerry West

Image
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Yesterday started like any other sunny, lazy summer day. I arrived at work at 9 a.m., checked my social media, and thought about leaving early to walk my dog. Then, my boss, Michael Fragale, came in to tell me that Jerry West had just died. "Better get to work," he said. The news hit like a basketball flying through the window. Writing obituaries for the department, I often had prepared notes for school legends like Hot Rod Hundley and Sam Huff, who had been in declining health. But Jerry West? The man who always seemed full of energy and vigor? Peter Pans don’t die, until they do. Where to begin with someone who achieved so much? What to include and what to leave out? It’s impossible to capture all of Jerry West’s accomplishments from his 86 well-lived years in a short time. How do you encapsulate his impact on the people of this great state and West Virginia University? When you don’t know where to start, begin at the beginning. For me, that meant a fil...
