Barcelona Stars Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas Aim for Paris 2024 Football Glory

Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas, key players for Barcelona, are targeting Olympic football success following their crucial roles in Barcelona's retention of the UEFA Women's Champions League football championship on Saturday (25 May).

Bonmati, the current holder of the Ballon d'Or Femenin and The Best FIFA Women's Player awards, scored the opening goal against Lyon at Bilbao's San Mames stadium. Her shot, deflected off Vanessa Gilles, beat Christiane Endler to give Barcelona the lead after an hour of play.

In a dramatic finale, Alexia Putellas, who came on as a substitute just minutes earlier, netted the second goal in injury time, securing a 2-0 victory and igniting celebrations among the traveling Barcelona supporters. This victory marked Barcelona's first triumph over Lyon in three Champions League finals.

Both Bonmati and Putellas are set to join Spain's squad for their debut in Olympic women's football at Paris 2024. With recent successes at the FIFA Women's World Cup and the UEFA Women's Nations League, Spain aims to add an Olympic gold to their list of achievements in the French capital.

The draw for the women's football event at Paris 2024 has placed world champions Spain against Brazil, promising an exciting clash on the Olympic stage. Spain's captain Irene Paredes has also been vocal about the importance of promoting equality in football, reflecting the broader themes surrounding the sport as it prepares for the grand stage of the Olympic Games.
