Biden says US troops fight to protect democracy
President Joe Biden honored fallen service members on Memorial Day, emphasizing their sacrifice for US democracy and a "more perfect union." Speaking at Arlington National Cemetery, he shared the grief of families who lost loved ones, including his son Beau, who died from brain cancer after serving in Iraq. Biden praised soldiers for their commitment to the ideals of America, highlighting the ongoing battle between democracy and autocracy.
In his speech, Biden stated, "Freedom has never been guaranteed. Every generation has had to earn it, fight for it, defend it in the battle between autocracy and democracy, between the greed of a few and the rights of many." He emphasized that US democracy is more than a system of government; it is the soul of America.
Before the speech, Biden participated in the traditional wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Vice-President Kamala Harris and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin accompanied him. Austin's appearance followed a brief transfer of his powers for a medical procedure unrelated to his recent prostate cancer diagnosis.
Biden's remarks mirrored his recent West Point address, where he reiterated that nothing is guaranteed about US democracy. This theme has been a recurring message in his speeches, including on the campaign trail. He has warned that his rival, Donald Trump, poses a fundamental threat to US democracy.
Trump also honored fallen military members on Memorial Day with a message on Truth Social, but in a separate post, he criticized the criminal cases against him, expressing disdain for those he believes are harming the country.
The president's address underscored the importance of remembering and honoring those who have sacrificed for the nation, while also reinforcing his commitment to defending democracy against ongoing threats.
