Giant Hyalomma Ticks Spreading in Northern Italy

In an alarming development, the giant tick species Hyalomma marginatum has been discovered in northern Italy, specifically in the province of Trieste. This species, known for its large size of up to two centimeters and distinctive striped legs, is making its presence felt in the Trieste Karst region, a popular tourist destination. The newfound prevalence of these ticks is attributed to the impact of global warming, which has led to shorter winters, creating favorable conditions for their settlement.

Unusual Behavior and Habitat Preferences of Hyalomma Ticks

Unlike common tick species such as the dog tick found in Switzerland, Hyalomma ticks possess unique characteristics like eyes and an active hunting behavior, where they pursue their hosts over long distances. Their preferred habitat includes sunny, open areas with short grass and stones, such as the rocky terrain of the Trieste Karst.

Spread of Hyalomma in Europe

While the presence of Hyalomma marginatum in Italy may not come as a surprise, given its distribution in other Southern European countries, the recent sightings in northern locations like Switzerland raise concerns. These giant ticks have also been reported in Switzerland, primarily in regions like Ticino and Zurich, likely brought in by migratory birds from warmer regions.

Monitoring Challenges in Switzerland

Despite the increasing reports of Hyalomma ticks in Switzerland, there seems to be a lack of monitoring and concerted efforts to address the issue. The prevalence of these ticks poses a potential threat, especially with the changing climate conditions that could further aid in their establishment in the country. Calls for better surveillance and management strategies have been made to prevent any potential future risks posed by these giant ticks.
