Hamas fires rockets at Tel Aviv as Israel attacks Rafah

Hamas launched a significant rocket barrage at Tel Aviv on Sunday, triggering alarms in the city for the first time in four months. This escalation aimed to demonstrate Hamas' military strength despite Israel's ongoing Gaza offensive. In response, Israeli strikes in Rafah killed at least five Palestinians as tanks approached the city's edges near the main southern crossing point into Egypt.

The Israeli military reported that eight projectiles were fired from Rafah, located about 100 kilometers south of Tel Aviv. This occurred despite a UN court ruling calling for an immediate halt to the offensive. Gaza's health ministry stated that nearly 36,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in the conflict.

Gaza's civil defense agency reported retrieving six bodies after an Israeli strike targeted a house in Rafah's eastern Khirbet al-Adas neighborhood. Witnesses also reported heavy artillery shelling in central Rafah's Yibna camp, as well as in the Sooq al-Halal and Qishta areas. Additionally, Israeli airstrikes targeted the Nuseirat refugee camp, and heavy artillery shelling hit northern Gaza. In Gaza City, Israeli tanks heavily shelled the Zeitun and Netzarim areas, and fighting continued in Jabaliya.

Israel claims its actions aim to root out Hamas fighters in Rafah and rescue Israeli prisoners held in the area. However, the assault has exacerbated civilian suffering and sparked international condemnation. Efforts to negotiate a truce and secure the release of over 100 Israeli prisoners held by Hamas have been stalled for weeks. However, there are signs of potential progress following recent meetings between Israeli and US intelligence officials and the Qatari prime minister.

An official indicated that talks might resume this week based on new proposals from Egyptian and Qatari mediators, with active US involvement. Despite these developments, Hamas official Izzat El-Reshiq denied receiving any new proposals for talks and reiterated demands for a complete and permanent end to aggression in Gaza.

Amid the ongoing conflict, Israel has faced calls to increase aid deliveries to Gaza, where the war has caused unprecedented destruction and widespread hunger. On Sunday, Israel prepared to allow around 200 aid trucks into Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing, bypassing the main Rafah crossing, which has been blocked for weeks. This followed an agreement between US President Joe Biden and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to temporarily send aid via the crossing. Egypt has expressed concern about large numbers of Palestinians entering its territory from Gaza and has kept its side of the Rafah crossing closed for nearly three weeks.
