Iraq’s Sadr demands closure of US embassy after Rafah strike

Influential Iraqi cleric Moqtada Sadr has renewed his call to close the US embassy in Baghdad following an Israeli airstrike that killed dozens of civilians in Gaza.

The strike on a displaced persons' camp in Rafah resulted in at least 45 deaths, according to health officials. Sadr condemned the attack and Washington's support for what he termed "genocide" in Gaza, urging the expulsion of the US ambassador through diplomatic means. He emphasized that this would prevent US officials from destabilizing Iraq.

The Iraqi foreign ministry also condemned the violence in Gaza, calling for international sanctions against Israel.

The Israeli Prime Minister labeled the strike a "tragic accident" but vowed to continue the military campaign against Hamas.

Since the conflict began on October 7, approximately 36,050 people in Gaza have been killed, mostly civilians, according to Gaza's health ministry.

Iraq's political parties, mirroring its neighbor Iran, support the Palestinian cause and do not recognize Israel.
