Missing Bangladesh MP Found Murdered in India: Minister Confirms

Anwarul Azim Anar, a member of Bangladesh's governing Awami League, was found murdered in Kolkata, India, over a week after he went missing, as confirmed by Bangladeshi Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan.

Mysterious Disappearance and Grim Discovery

Anar, 56, who was serving his third consecutive term in Jhenaidah's constituency, disappeared on May 13, a day after arriving in India for medical treatment. According to his relatives, Anar had visited the residence of Gopal Biswas in Kolkata on May 12 and left the next day for a doctor's appointment, promising to return to Bangladesh by evening. However, he remained unreachable thereafter, prompting concern and a report filed by his relatives at Baranagar police station in North Kolkata on May 18.

Investigation and Arrests

Home Minister Khan revealed that three Bangladeshis have been arrested in connection with Anar's death. However, he withheld further details to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation. Anar’s body was discovered in an abandoned house in Kolkata’s New Town early Wednesday morning, according to a deputy police commissioner in the city.

Efforts to Locate the Missing MP

Following his disappearance, Anar's daughter, Mumtarin Ferdous Doreen, sought assistance from the detective branch of Bangladesh police. Over the past three days, the special unit collaborated with Kolkata police to locate Anar. Special unit chief Harun-or-Rashid confirmed that Anar’s body was found early in the morning, though the cause of death remains undetermined.

Reactions and Condolences

Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud mentioned that the body was not found in the flat where Anar was believed to have been killed, based on information from the Bangladesh Mission in Kolkata. Anar's daughter was in Kolkata on Wednesday to receive her father's body following an autopsy. Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her condolences and profound grief over the tragic death of the lawmaker.

Conclusion

The murder of Anwarul Azim Anar has shocked both Bangladesh and India, highlighting the necessity of a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. As authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding his death, the tragic loss of a dedicated public servant leaves a significant void in the political landscape.
