UK High Court allows Julian Assange to continue appealing extradition to US

The UK High Court has ruled that Julian Assange can continue to appeal his extradition to the United States, pending specific assurances from the US government. The court's decision mandates that the US provide guarantees within three weeks that Assange will not face the death penalty and that he will be able to rely on the First Amendment protections for free speech. If these assurances are not provided, Assange will be allowed to appeal without further hearings.

Assange, who has been held in London's Belmarsh Prison since 2019, faces 18 charges in the US, including 17 under the Espionage Act. The charges relate to WikiLeaks' publication of classified US military and diplomatic documents. His legal team argues that the extradition is politically motivated and that he would not receive a fair trial in the US. They also highlight the potential for additional charges to be brought against him after extradition.

The High Court's ruling is significant as it keeps Assange's legal battle ongoing, which has been a decade-long saga involving various legal challenges and his prolonged stay in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. The court's decision underscores concerns about his potential treatment in the US and the broader implications for press freedom and whistleblowing.
