Heat Icon Alonzo Mourning Battles Prostate Cancer, Urges Men to Get Checked

A Hall of Famer's Health Scare Turns into a Call to Action
Alonzo Mourning, the former Miami Heat star and current executive, has beaten cancer and is now on a mission to raise awareness about prostate cancer. After undergoing surgery to remove his prostate in March, Mourning is using his platform to encourage men to be proactive about their health.
"This is Much Bigger Than Me"
Mourning, who turned 54 in February, was diagnosed with Stage 3 prostate cancer in February after a biopsy. He credits his early detection and treatment for his successful recovery. "I was very, very blessed to have caught it early," Mourning said. "I want men to get out in front of it."
Prostate Cancer: The Silent Killer
Mourning refers to prostate cancer as "a silent killer" since men can have the disease without symptoms. According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the United States, affecting one in eight men during their lifetime.
Mourning's Message
Mourning hopes to inspire men to prioritize their health and get regular checkups. "This is about keeping people alive, it truly is," Mourning said. "I was lucky. There are a lot of people that won't be as lucky as I am. But I feel like if I can reach them before it gets to that point and they're able to make the right health decisions for themselves, that's what this is all about. Me sitting here is about saving lives."
A Legacy of Resilience
Mourning has faced serious health issues before, including a kidney transplant in 2003. His courage and determination have made him a beloved figure in the NBA and a role model for men everywhere.
