Severe Weather Pounds Southeast Wisconsin on Saturday Night

A night of wild weather swept through southeast Wisconsin on Saturday, June 22nd, 2024, bringing damaging storms, hail, and threats of tornadoes. Thankfully, by 10 pm that night, all tornado warnings and watches had expired.

The storms left a path of destruction in their wake, particularly in Janesville, where reports of strong winds and hail damage were widespread. While the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, there are fortunately no reports of major injuries.

NWS Issues Tornado Watches and Warnings

The National Weather Service (NWS) kept a close eye on the developing storm system throughout the day. By early evening, a tornado watch was issued for a large swath of southeast Wisconsin, encompassing Dodge, Jefferson, Walworth, Washington, and Waukesha counties. As the storms intensified, the watch area was expanded to include Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, and Racine counties, keeping nearly 1.5 million residents on edge.

The situation escalated further when the NWS upgraded the watch to a tornado warning for Dodge and Jefferson counties. This warning, issued at 7:10 pm, advised residents to seek shelter immediately as a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was detected near Watertown. The warning was extended until 8 pm.

Throughout the evening, numerous other severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for various counties, highlighting the widespread nature of the storm.

Concert Evacuated and Events Disrupted

The severe weather also caused disruptions to local events. The Dave Matthews Band concert at Alpine Valley was postponed due to a tornado warning, and the venue was evacuated for safety reasons.

Damage Assessment and Recovery

The coming days will see crews out assessing the damage caused by the storms. The National Weather Service will likely send out survey teams to confirm if any tornadoes actually touched down.
