Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM): The Revolutionary Front Leading Sikkim
The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, also known as the Sikkim Revolutionary Front, has been a dominant force in Sikkim's political landscape since its inception in 2013. As the state's ruling party since 2019, SKM has been instrumental in shaping Sikkim's development and growth.
According to India Today's exit polls for the 2024 Sikkim Assembly elections, SKM is poised to retain power, potentially winning a significant 24 to 30 of the 32 seats. This comes as no surprise, given the party's popularity and the leadership of PS Golay, a seasoned politician with a strong grassroots connect.
Golay's journey in politics began with the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), where he served as a minister in the state government. However, he began to question the leadership of Pawan Kumar Chamling, the then-President of SDF and former chief minister of Sikkim, in December 2009. This led to Golay's eventual departure from SDF and the founding of SKM on February 4, 2013.
Under Golay's leadership, SKM has emerged as a powerful force in Sikkim politics, contesting all 32 constituencies in the 2014 and 2019 Sikkim Legislative Assembly elections and winning 10 and 17 seats, respectively. The party's impressive performance in the 2019 elections led to its inclusion in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
As SKM looks set to retain power in Sikkim, the party's focus on development, infrastructure, and social welfare is likely to continue shaping the state's future. With PS Golay at the helm, SKM is poised to remain a significant player in Sikkim's political landscape for years to come.
