Sunrise on the Reaping: New Hunger Games Prequel Details
Suzanne Collins, the author of "The Hunger Games," is crafting a new book titled "Sunrise on the Reaping," set for release in 2025. This book will be adapted into a film scheduled to hit theaters on November 20, 2026. Francis Lawrence, who has directed every Hunger Games film since "Catching Fire," is in talks to direct this new installment.
Storyline
"Sunrise on the Reaping" is set 24 years before the original trilogy and 40 years after "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes." The plot begins on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The central character will be Haymitch Abernathy, who was portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the previous films. In the original series, Haymitch mentors Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) during the 74th Hunger Games.
Comments from Lionsgate
Adam Fogelson, chairman of Lionsgate, praised Suzanne Collins as a master storyteller and expressed excitement about collaborating with her on this new project. He highlighted the significance of the Second Quarter Quell in the history of the Hunger Games.
Franchise Success
The Hunger Games franchise has grossed over $3.3 billion globally, with "Catching Fire" being the highest-grossing film, earning $865 million. Although "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" didn't match the original series' success, it still turned a profit due to its budget. This film focused on the early life of Coriolanus Snow, the future tyrannical leader of Panem
