Toronto Dodges Severe Weather Bullet: Storm Warnings Expire
Residents of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) can breathe a sigh of relief as the severe thunderstorm watch and rainfall warning issued on Saturday have finally expired. Environment Canada lifted the advisories early Sunday morning, June 23rd, 2024.
Earlier Threat of Damaging Winds, Hail, and Downpours
The weather agency had warned of potentially hazardous conditions throughout Saturday. The forecast included strong wind gusts reaching up to 90 kilometers per hour, nickel to toonie-sized hail (referencing Canadian one and two-dollar coins), and torrential downpours.
Environment Canada highlighted the potential dangers associated with these weather phenomena. Large hail could cause property damage and inflict injuries, while strong winds could toss loose objects, damage weak structures, break tree branches, and even overturn large vehicles. Additionally, heavy downpours were predicted to lead to flash floods and significant water pooling on roadways, creating hazardous driving conditions.
Rainfall Threat Abated
The rainfall warning specifically mentioned the possibility of localized rainfall amounts reaching nearly 50 millimeters within a very short timeframe – just a few hours. This could have resulted in significant flooding concerns.
Toronto Weathers the Storm (Relatively)
Thankfully, the predicted severity of the storm did not materialize. While Environment Canada has not yet released a detailed post-storm report, it appears Toronto and the GTA escaped major weather-related incidents.
This event serves as a reminder of the importance of staying informed about weather warnings and taking necessary precautions during periods of potential storms.
