Two Earthquakes Recorded Around Georgia’s Lake Lanier: Dozens Feel Shaking, USGS Reports

On the night of Thursday, June 6, 2024, residents near Georgia’s Lake Lanier experienced an unexpected disruption as two earthquakes were recorded in the area. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quakes occurred overnight, causing dozens of people to report feeling the tremors in the dark.

The first earthquake, registering a magnitude of 2.5, struck around 11:15 p.m. This quake was centered near Buford, located at the southern end of the expansive 39,000-acre lake. Approximately two hours later, a second earthquake of 2.1 magnitude occurred, with its epicenter two miles southwest of the first, near Sugar Hill.

The USGS noted that the stronger of the two quakes originated from bedrock approximately 2.5 miles deep. This quake was felt by over 130 people, most of whom were in Buford. However, nearly 50 residents in Cumming, about 12 miles northeast of the epicenter, also reported experiencing weak shaking. In contrast, the 2.1 magnitude quake was reported by about a dozen individuals.

Experts state that earthquakes generally aren’t felt until they exceed a magnitude of 2.5, which is also the threshold at which minor damage can begin to occur. Historical records from the USGS indicate that earthquakes are relatively rare in this region. Since January 1990, only one other quake—a 2.2 magnitude event in 2020—has been recorded in the vicinity. That quake was felt by more than 70 witnesses.

Lake Lanier itself is a man-made reservoir, created when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed Buford Dam, flooding 47 miles of riverbed. Today, the lake boasts 692 miles of shoreline and reaches depths of over 200 feet.

What to Do in an Earthquake

Earthquakes can strike suddenly and with little warning, leading to potentially dangerous situations including fires, tsunamis, landslides, or avalanches. While they can occur anywhere, they are most common in regions such as Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Puerto Rico, and Washington.

If an earthquake occurs, it's crucial to take immediate protective actions. Here are expert-recommended safety tips:

  • If you’re in a car: Pull over to a safe location and stop. Set your parking brake to avoid rolling.
  • If you’re in bed: Turn face-down and cover your head and neck with a pillow to protect against falling debris.
  • If you’re outdoors: Stay clear of buildings, trees, streetlights, and utility wires. Do not seek shelter indoors.
  • If you’re indoors: Stay inside and avoid running outside. Steer clear of doorways and windows.

The best protective action during an earthquake is to "drop, cover, and hold on." Here’s how to do it effectively:

  • Drop down to your hands and knees. This position prevents you from being knocked over and allows you to move if necessary.
  • Cover your head and neck with your arms. If possible, crawl under a sturdy table or piece of furniture. If no shelter is available, move to an interior wall away from windows.
  • Hold on to your shelter until the shaking stops. If you’re under a table, hold onto one of the legs with one hand and be ready to move with it if necessary.

For those using a wheelchair or walker, make sure the wheels are locked and remain seated until the shaking ceases.

After the initial quake, be prepared for potential aftershocks. These secondary tremors can follow the main event and cause further damage. Stay alert and ready to drop, cover, and hold on again if needed.

Post-earthquake, be cautious of potential hazards such as structural damage, leaking gas and water lines, or downed power lines. Always prioritize your safety and follow official guidance to navigate the aftermath of an earthquake.

In summary, the two earthquakes near Georgia’s Lake Lanier served as a reminder of the importance of earthquake preparedness, even in regions where such events are rare. By understanding and following safety protocols, individuals can protect themselves and reduce the risk of injury during these unpredictable natural phenomena
