BLACKPINK’s Jennie Faces Backlash for Allegedly Copying Alia Bhatt’s ‘Rani’ Intro
Updated: 07 Mar, 2025

BLACKPINK’s Jennie has sparked controversy after fans accused her of plagiarizing Bollywood star Alia Bhatt’s iconic ‘Rani’ theme from the movie Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The allegations arose after Jennie teased a snippet of her new solo track, ‘Like Jennie’, from her debut album Ruby, set to release on Friday.

Social media erupted with comparisons, with fans pointing out similarities between the two songs, particularly the repeated chants of “Rani” and “Jennie” in the chorus. One user commented, “All I hear is plagiarism,” while others joked that Jennie might have “run out of ideas.”

BLINKs, BLACKPINK’s dedicated fanbase, defended Jennie, arguing that it’s not plagiarism if the original creators are credited. However, Jennie has yet to credit anyone in the snippet. Some fans also highlighted the irony of the situation, noting that Pritam, the composer of the ‘Rani’ theme, has himself been accused of copying music in the past.

Jennie’s debut album, Ruby, named after her middle name, reflects her journey to establish a musical identity outside of BLACKPINK, where she is known as the group’s ‘face’ and lead singer. In an interview with Billboard, Jennie shared her struggles, saying, “I struggled a lot in the beginning... I just had to keep knocking on the door, like, ‘Is this it?’”

This isn’t the first time BLACKPINK has faced backlash. In 2020, the group was criticized for featuring the Hindu god Ganesha in their music video for ‘How You Like That’, with fans accusing them of cultural appropriation.

As the debate continues, fans and critics alike await the full release of ‘Like Jennie’ to determine whether the similarities are coincidental or a case of plagiarism.
