Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta Suffers Ear Injury After Reckless Challenge

Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta Suffers Ear Injury After Reckless Challenge

Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta was hospitalized following a reckless challenge by Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts during an FA Cup tie on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred in a match that saw Crystal Palace advance to the next round with a 3-1 victory, while Millwall were reduced to 10 men after Roberts was sent off for the dangerous tackle.

The 27-year-old French striker was stretchered off the pitch and required oxygen after the high challenge left him bleeding heavily from his ear. Initial concerns about Mateta’s condition were alleviated after he posted on social media, stating, “I’m doing well.” However, reports from *L’Équipe* confirm that the wound on his ear will require stitching.

Mateta has been in exceptional form this season, scoring 15 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions, including eight goals in his last eight Premier League matches. His absence would be a significant blow to Crystal Palace, who are hoping for his swift recovery.

The incident has sparked discussions about player safety, with Roberts’ challenge widely criticized. Millwall’s exit from the FA Cup adds to their disappointment, while Crystal Palace will now focus on their upcoming fixtures with hopes of having their talismanic striker back in action soon.
