Pakistan May Face US Travel Ban if Deficiencies Not Addressed Within 60 Days

Pakistan is among 26 countries that could face a partial suspension of US visa issuance if the government fails to address “deficiencies” within 60 days, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters. The move is part of a broader immigration crackdown by the Donald Trump administration, which is considering sweeping travel restrictions for citizens of dozens of countries.

The memo divides 41 countries into three groups:

  1. Full Visa Suspension: Includes Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Cuba, and North Korea.
  2. Partial Suspension: Affects tourist, student, and immigrant visas for Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Myanmar, and South Sudan.
  3. Potential Partial Suspension: Includes Pakistan, Belarus, and Turkmenistan, among others, if their governments do not address deficiencies within the stipulated timeframe.

A US official cautioned that the list is not final and requires approval from key administration figures, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

This policy echoes Trump’s first-term travel ban targeting majority-Muslim nations, which was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018. The current directive, issued on January 20, 2025, mandates intensified security vetting for foreigners entering the US to detect national security threats.

Pakistan has yet to receive official communication regarding the potential ban, but the development has raised concerns about the impact on bilateral relations and travel for Pakistani citizens.
