Western Allies Rally Around Zelensky After Tense Trump Meeting Deepens US-Europe Rift

Western leaders have rushed to support Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following a heated Oval Office meeting with US President Donald Trump, which has further strained relations between Washington and its European allies. The confrontation highlights the delicate balance Western capitals face: maintaining strong support for Ukraine against Russian aggression while navigating Trump’s increasingly transactional and Russia-friendly approach to foreign policy.

The meeting, marked by a fiery argument between Trump and Zelensky, has alarmed European leaders who have long relied on US backing for Ukraine. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who met with Trump earlier in the week, spoke with both leaders afterward, reaffirming the UK’s “unwavering support” for Ukraine. Starmer emphasized the need for a peace deal that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and security, rather than rewarding Russia.

The UK is set to host a summit of European leaders on Sunday, with Zelensky expected to attend. The gathering aims to solidify support for Kyiv and address the growing divide between the US and Europe over Ukraine.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, a key Trump ally in Europe, called for a broader summit involving the US and European nations to discuss the war, warning that division weakens the West. European leaders have expressed confusion over Trump’s sudden shift in tone toward Zelensky and his apparent concessions to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Zelensky has since spoken with French President Emmanuel Macron and European Council President António Costa, receiving assurances of continued support. Macron stated, “There is an aggressor, which is Russia, and an attacked people, which is Ukraine.” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz echoed this sentiment, writing on X, “Ukraine can rely on Germany – and on Europe.”

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also spoke with Zelensky, while Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda declared, “Ukraine, you’ll never walk alone.” Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna warned that if Ukraine stops fighting, “there will be no Ukraine.”

Support for Kyiv extended beyond Europe, with key US allies like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand reaffirming their commitment to Ukraine. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated, “Russia illegally and unjustifiably invaded Ukraine. Their fight for democracy, freedom, and sovereignty matters to us all.”

However, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a Trump ally, broke ranks with European leaders, praising Trump for “standing bravely for peace” despite the controversy.

In Ukraine, the tense exchange with Trump has bolstered Zelensky’s domestic support. Ukrainian lawmakers and military officials rallied behind their president, with one officer stating, “It’s better to fight to death than to freeze the war and then be drained again in three years.”

The incident underscores the challenges facing Western unity as Trump’s approach to Ukraine continues to diverge from that of Europe. While European leaders remain steadfast in their support for Kyiv, the rift with Washington raises questions about the future of transatlantic cooperation in the face of Russian aggression.
