Helen Worth to Leave Coronation Street After 50 Years
After a remarkable 50-year career on Coronation Street, Helen Worth, who plays Gail Platt (formerly Rodwell), has announced her departure from the ITV soap opera. Worth, who joined the show in 1974, will leave at the end of the year following a significant storyline for the Platt family.
A Legendary Career
Worth's iconic character, Gail, has been at the center of some of the show's most memorable storylines, including being pushed down the stairs, mistakenly jailed, and married to a serial killer. Her portrayal has earned her numerous awards, including an MBE for services to drama and the outstanding achievement award at the British Soap Awards.
Executive Producer's Tribute
Iain MacLeod, executive producer, praised Worth, saying: "The words 'legend' and 'icon' genuinely apply to Gail and Helen Worth. She has been a huge part of Coronation Street for five decades, and her departure will be felt by fans and the cast alike."
A New Era for Coronation Street
Worth's departure comes as the show faces criticism over its recent plotlines. The new producer, Kate Brooks, who joined from Emmerdale, will oversee the transition and shape the future of the soap.
